Dentures
Dentures are one of the most popular ways to replace or restore missing or damaged teeth due to their durability, natural appearance, and affordability. Today’s dentures are incredibly life-like and comfortable, made of durable materials that restore your ability to eat and speak properly and flash a gorgeous smile. At FM Dentistry & Orthodontics, you can trust Dr. Mohandes’s expertise. She uses the latest digital technology to design and fit custom-fabricated dentures of the highest-quality materials. These lightweight dentures are affordable but durable and can replace missing teeth without invasive surgery or months of recovery.
Partial Dentures
If you still have some natural teeth, a partial denture can restore your smile by replacing your missing teeth. The removable partial denture, sometimes called a partial plate, includes a set of replacement teeth anchored in a gum-colored base. The partial is held in place by wires or fasteners that attach to your natural teeth. The partial denture helps prevent any remaining teeth from shifting and preserves your smile.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures, sometimes called Full Dentures, replace a full set of upper or lower teeth. The dentures sit directly on your gums and must be custom-designed and fabricated to fit the contours of your jawbone and gum tissues. Dr. Mohandes typically makes complete dentures after any teeth have been removed and the gums have healed to ensure a precise fit. However, she can also provide temporary dentures during the healing phase so that you do not have to go without teeth while you wait for your permanent dentures.

How Dentures are Made
Most dentures are made of acrylic and can be fabricated in two different ways. A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed. On the other hand, an immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted, allowing the tissues to heal under the denture.

- An upper denture has acrylic, usually flesh-colored, that covers the palate (roof of the mouth).
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.
The teeth are made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of both. Dentures can be fabricated to fit over endodontically treated teeth, and a complete denture can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit of the appliance.
Dentures Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dentures last?
Dentures typically last 5-10 years before needing replacement due to wear and tear. It is important to replace them to ensure they fit comfortably and perform properly.
What if my new dentures feel uncomfortable?
It’s normal for your new dentures to feel a bit awkward at first. It may take a few weeks to adjust to the feeling of your dentures in your mouth. If they continue to feel uncomfortable, please call our office so we can arrange an appointment to evaluate your dentures’ fit. Remember, it’s common for someone wearing dentures for the first time to need an adjustment or two to arrive at the ideal fit.
How do I care for my dentures?
It is crucial to keep your dentures clean. Brush them with a soft bristle brush and either liquid soap or a denture cleaning pastes every day (toothpaste is too abrasive). Soak them overnight in cool or warm (never hot!) water so they do not dry out, and always keep them in their case if you are traveling with them.
Do I have to take my dentures out at night?
Yes. This allows your gums and jawbones to rest after wearing the dentures all day and prevents bacteria buildup, which can lead to gum disease and other oral health problems.
Can anyone get dentures?
Although partial or complete dentures are an excellent and affordable solution for most people who are missing several or all of their teeth, they are not suitable for everyone. If you do not have sufficient jawbone mass, you may have to undergo bone grafting before getting dentures. Some chronic medical conditions, including severe periodontal disease, may rule you out as a candidate for dentures. However, if you are in good health with enough jawbone and healthy gums, you are a good candidate for dentures.
