Symptoms of Dental Emergencies

  • Severe and throbbing pain in a tooth.
  • Swollen and painful gums.
  • Trouble opening or closing the jaw.
  • Jaw pain accompanied by swelling.
  • Teeth that are broken, chipped, or cracked.
  • Severe pain radiating toward the ear.
  • Broken, Cracked, and Chipped Teeth.
  • Broken or missing fillings or crowns.
  • A tooth that has been knocked out.
  • A tooth that has loosened.
  • Discharge of pus from the mouth.
  • Heavy bleeding lasting longer than 15 minutes.

Many people don’t realize that some dental emergencies don’t cause pain, including cracked teeth. If your tooth is cracked, broken, or otherwise suddenly damaged, do NOT ignore the situation, as it may lead to nerve damage in the roots. If you have any of the above symptoms, even without pain, you should always call our office so that we can evaluate your tooth as soon as possible. Putting it off could lead to the loss of the tooth or the spread of any infection.

We urge you to call us at the first sign of a dental emergency!

What To Do if a Tooth is Knocked Out

For a permanent tooth that is knocked out, rinse it and put it back in the socket. If you can’t get the tooth back in the socket, place it in a container of milk, water, or saliva to keep it moist. Do not touch the roots (handle the tooth by the crown) and don’t brush the tooth. Contact us IMMEDIATELY for information and emergency treatment. The sooner you get to us, the more likely we can save your tooth!

If a baby tooth is knocked out, leave it out and call us right away for instructions.

Pain Management

If you can’t get into our office immediately, here is a list of effective home remedies to make you more comfortable while you wait for care:

  • Warm saltwater rinses for sore teeth and gums.
  • Over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen (NOT aspirin).
  • Ice packs applied to the outside of the cheeks.
  • Dental anesthetics containing benzocaine may be used as directed on the package for pain.
  • Avoid excessively hot and cold beverages and foods to reduce sensitivity.
  • Heating pads may be used for jaw pain.
  • Avoid chewing in the injured area.
  • If a broken tooth has a sharp edge, cotton can be placed over it to protect soft tissues in your mouth.
